AP - When DaimlerChrysler announced in 2006 that it planned to bring the Smart Fortwo micro car to the United States after nearly a decade in Europe, gas prices had reached about $2.80 a gallon. Now, Americans are paying more than $4 a gallon at the pump, SUV sales are plummeting and consumers are hungry for smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles.

The little Smart has been riding a wave of consumer interest, attracting thousands of shoppers willing to put down $99 and wait about nine months for the two-seater. Hyundai Matrix Facelift Premiere

The 2009 Hyundai Matrix Facelift made a quiet world premiere at the2008 Geneva Motor Show, tips, not to be confused with the US market Toyota Matrix. Why not enjoy looking at antique and sports cars won’t want to miss the Congo Truck Club’s 6th Annual Truck and Car Show on Saturday.

The event — featuring street rods, classic cars, sports cars and more — will be held Saturday at the Ben E. Keith Distributing parking lot located at 2019 W. Oak St. in Palestine.

“We are inviting the public to come out and judge,” said club president Garland Wilson. “We have people coming from Tyler, Longview, Marshall, Carthage, Shreveport, Texarkana, Grand Prairie, Fairfield, Buffalo and Corsicana and all over Dallas, so hopefully we will have a good turnout.”

Entry will start at 10 a.m. with the cut off at 2 p.m. Entry fee is $20 per vehicle. Trophies will be awarded at 3 p.m.

The middle school, in partnership with the Royal Oak Foundation for Public Education, is sponsoring the first annual Bulldog Classic Car Show from noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 2. Cars are still being sought for the show, and all kinds of classics — from old Model T’s to souped-up muscle cars — are eligible.
