2008 Lexus GS 450h

The Lexus GS 450h hybrids have a well-founded reputation for being sluggish, but some are downright powerful.

Most hybrids rely on small, underpowered gasoline engines paired with electric motors — great for reducing fuel consumption; not so great when it comes to acceleration. A new generation of sporty hybrids is in the works and ought to give the segment an image makeover after coming to market. » Read the rest of the entry..

Production of the Camry hybrid is slated to begin in late 2006 at the company’s Georgetown, Ky., plant, making it the company’s first U.S.-built hybrid.

“This is a proud day for the entire state of Kentucky,” said Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher.

“Once the decision was reached to make a hybrid version of our best-selling vehicle — the Camry — the Georgetown plant was the natural choice for Toyota’s first North American hybrid production,” added Gary Convis, president of Kentucky plant. “Our team members’ hard work and dedication over the last 20 years will ensure that the production of these cutting-edge vehicles in Kentucky will also be hugely successful.”

The company already makes a hybrid sedan, the Prius, which had U.S. sales of 53,991 last year. By comparison, the Camry had U.S. sales of 965,091.

“The continued success of Prius has demonstrated consumers’ growing demand for hybrid vehicles,” said Jim Press, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Toyota Motor Sales. “Hybrid production in the U.S. will allow us to be even more responsive to the desires of our customers.” » Read the rest of the entry..

Toyota sales Prius and Camry hybrids reached record levels in March as the technology has broken out of the “early adopter” niche and gone mainstream, according to Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. General Manager Bob Carter.

“Right now the technology is acceptable beyond the early adopters,” he said. Because of that trend, the company is focusing its attention on providing hybrid versions of its bread-and-butter models sooner rather than later.

The company has made a general statement that it hopes to eventually offer hybrid versions of every model it sells. But in the near-term, it makes sense to focus on high-volume market segments, said Carter. “We are covering the main segments first, the midsize sedan and midsize SUV segments,” Carter said. Toyota sells more Sienna minivans than Highlander SUVs, so that looks like another strong candidate segment, especially because the two vehicles share much of their mechanical design.

“Personally I think [a Sienna hybrid] would be a home run,” Carter opined. “But that decision has not been made.”

The most of its major flaws fixed, the 2009 Mazda 6 is easily one of the most impressive sedans in the midsize class.

Car companies don’t admit mistakes, but Hiroshi Kajiyama doesn’t have a problem fessing up to a few missteps. He’s the chief program engineer for the forthcoming 2009 Mazda 6 and although his English isn’t perfect, it’s clear he knows the current car has problems.
